It’s a Gas! Gas! Gas!

Given that an arctic blast has encompassed most of the United States and here in New England it’s -2 degrees this morning, I thought I’d get a post pulled together to shed some warmth on us all.  You all have seen my living room plenty of times and our amazing built-ins my dad added around our fireplace and hearth, but as a reminder here’s where we’ve been the last few years.

Living Room

As I mentioned in a previous post, Jake and I didn’t do much for gifts for each because we decided to give ourselves a huge gift and convert our fireplace to gas.  It was installed the week before Christmas and we LOVE it!

We chose to add just a gas log set which still throws heat, although more minimally than a full insert.  This was a better choice for us since our thermostat is in this room and our house is only one zone.  Too much heat would cause our thermostat to turn off and then we’d have a very chilly second floor.  Plus this gives us what we really wanted – a nice clean burning fire to cozy up to with no mess and no fuss!

The glass doors we chose are bifold and fold back completely on either side which maintains our nice big hearth when the fire is on or off.  We also chose to go with a heavier steel frame which is really sturdy and durable, but also gives the whole thing a very rich look, we think.

When the gas is off the doors close up to seal out any drafts from the chimney.  There were so many door options and glass options, but we’re pretty decisive and were drawn to these options fairly quickly – steel frame, dark bronze color, the modern square handles and clear glass.

There were tons of choices on log sets too and we went with Charred English Oak logs in a 24″ set since we could fit it (standard is 18″) from Real Frye.  The whole process was made so easy since the fireplace store we worked with coordinated everything for us. If you’re in the Boston area, we visited Yankee Fireplace and Grill City in Middleton, MA.  Our sales rep, Sally, helped us with all our choices and was able to provide immediate pricing and feedback.  She also coordinated everything from the plumber for the gas install, the gas log installation, the door measurement and installation – it was all taken care of right from there.  All we had to do was meet them when needed and pay the bill!

It’s a great addition, right in time for these frigid temperatures and it’s beautiful to look at to boot! In the words of the illustrious Rolling Stones, “It’s a Gas! Gas! Gas!”.

What are you getting cozy by this winter?  Stay warm and remember to keep your pets inside and warm too!

We were not assisted or compensated in anyway by Yankee Fireplace and Grill City for this install.  We just really enjoy the process of working with them and wanted to share our opinions!
